Lock Bumping

Lock bumping and snapping are well known buzz-phrases in the locksmith industry.  Snapping describes the process of when a euro profile cylinder lock is snapped at its weakest point to gain entry. Bumping similarly describes a process which can allow the lock to be opened by the insertion of a specially adapted key, which, when pressure is applied, can open the lock mechanism and leave the premises vulnerable.  As such, it’s known to the police, security professionals and insurers.

Of course, a range of products and locks have been developed that are designed to stay one step ahead of this process, and which will maintain their integrity and resist most attempts to bump or snap the cylinder lock.

The Door and Hardware Federation (DHF), along with the Glass and Glazing Federation and with support from Secured by Design, have developed a new Kitemark standard for these products – TS 007 – to provide all customers with the peace of mind that any products they purchase and install that contain this Kitemark are up to the high standards set by the industry.

This means that any products displaying the TS 007 Kitemark will be at a reduced risk of lock bumping and cylinder snapping, and it has, according to the chairman of the DHF, the highest level of consumer recognition.

Each product, whether it’s a lock or other door security item, is rated between one and three stars, with three stars being the most secure.  As a result, there are various ways to meet this standard, whether it’s a combination of a one star and a two star rated product to achieve the desired three star rating, or whether it’s a single product that’s rated to three stars on its own.

As members of the DHF and Master Locksmiths Association (MLA), Doorfit supply products that display the relevant Kitemark, and which are therefore less likely to become vulnerable to cylinder snapping and lock bumping.  Doorfit are happy to discuss your requirements and advise which products will be most suitable, and you can rely on their expert team to ensure that your locks are secure, safe and up to the required industry standard.
