Types of lock explained; TS 007 standard

With the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) reporting that almost ‘70% of UK residential entrance doors are vulnerable to lock attack’, it is now more important than ever to consider the security of the buildings we are responsible for.

The first step towards this should be to check the level of protection our current locks are providing. This is especially important when it comes to uPVC doors fitted with a standard Euro cylinder lock which are most commonly attacked using techniques such as snapping or bumping. These methods involve force being applied to the lock before quite literally snapping them in two – something that takes only seconds for a burglar to achieve.

It is for this reason that the TS 007 standard of lock has been introduced to the market. Developed by the DHF and the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF), alongside consultation with other industry organisations such as the British Standards Institution and Secured by Design, this standard of lock offers a 3-star security solution for domestic uPVC and composite exterior doors – protecting them against most forms of lock attack.

Holding the widely recognised kitemark symbol, the 3-star rating can be achieved in two ways:

  • Using a combination of a 1-star cylinder with 2-star security hardware
  • Or simply using a 3-star cylinder.

This enhanced level of security ensures that regardless of how the lock is attacked, including using methods such as snapping, it will remain secure and continue to prevent entry to the property.

Examples of this standard of lock:

Abus E90N 80mm Satin Nickel Anti Bump & Snap Euro Cylinder & Turn

Abus E90B 100mm Satin Brass Anti Bump & Snap Euro Double Cylinder

As the recommended choice of lock for those requiring upgraded protection or a replacement lock cylinder and associated security hardware for their uPVC or composite entrance door, Doorfit can provide guidance and advice on the best product for you.
