Types of lock explained – uPVC, residential doors

Regardless of whether you are seeking a door lock for your home or looking to find the right specification for a new development, it is vital that the correct product is chosen in order to meet the necessary requirements of your property.

The following points outline the main types of locks that should be considered when fitting a uPVC door, providing the level of security and functionality needed for effective use in the years to come.

Choosing a uPVC door lock

Frequently used for both main entry points and patio doors on residential properties; uPVC is a popular material that will most commonly be secured using a multipoint lock that functionally complies with PAS 3621 standards. Multipoint locks are typically found on both uPVC and composite doors. They are lengthy in appearance and will lock at several points along the frame, to give extra security.

As PAS 3621 is still a relatively new standard to come to market, in the majority of cases whilst manufacturers are able to provide products that comply with the PAS 3621 family in terms of functionality, they have not yet undergone testing in order to prove them to be officially compliant. Whilst this means that you may find it difficult to locate products that are certified to be within the PAS 3621 category, there are many locking systems currently available that offer the functionalities addressed by this standard.

Providing the same levels of security as BS 3621 compliant door lock mechanisms but for multipoint locking systems, those associated with PAS 3621 are tested to the equivalent side load forces and test methods, and should, in most cases, carry the well-known Kite mark symbol.

The following points outline the main security features included within the PAS 3621 family, and offer examples of locks that should be considered when choosing the right specification for your property.

PAS 3621 – Providing the minimum level of security expected by British insurers on external doors to residential properties, locks complying to this standard remain a popular choice across the UK.

Best used when: High security is needed. PAS 3621 locks should be used with a TS007 3 star cylinder to gain the highest level of security. In addition, PAS 3621 is increasingly required by leading insurance companies.

PAS 8621Offering the same use and standards as that of the BS 8621 but for multipoint locks, products conforming to this standard allow residents to exit a building without the need for a key. A key is still required for entry to the building and securing the property.

Best used when:  No other emergency exits are available and there are no security risks such as letter flaps or windows in close proximity to the lock that could allow someone to reach through and unlock the door from the inside.

Examples of locks that are functionally compliant with this standard include:

Winkhaus MPL3163 Cobra Master 4 Hook Multipoint Door Lock 35mm Backset

Winkhaus MPL3169 Cobra Master 2 Hook Multipoint Door Lock 35mm Backset

Winkhaus WHCM24520 Cobra 2 Hook Multipoint Door Lock 45mm Backset

Winkhaus AV2 2 Hook Automatic Multipoint Door Lock 45mm Backset (R/H)

PAS 10621Working in the same way as locks conforming to PAS 8621 standards, those complying with PAS 10621 regulations offer the additional ability to deadlock the door from the outside. This removes the possibility of the building being unlocked from the inside without the use of a key until such time as the deadlock is once again removed.

Best used when: The ability to lock down the building completely when no one is left inside is required. However, when choosing this form of lock there should always be other methods of emergency escape available.
